One child out of a dozen...

Bad news/Good news....We landed in a small hamlet to pick up refugees but the NVA had already gotten there.
They kidnapped the women and murdered all the children. As we were putting the children in potato sacks I walked over to a young girl laying there. I picked her up and she was still warm, but we didn;t have time since the morrtars could hit at any second.
(The rule was---we had 60 seconds to collect the living or dead before mortars or rockets started coming down. I put the girl in a sack the crew chief was holding open and we got out of there. About 3 minutes after takeoff the flight engineer yelled that one of the sacks was moving---he opened it and
a young girl peeked out and began to cry as we all cheered. The flight engineer picked her up and hugged her like she was his own child.
That's a bitter-sweet memory which my combat-related Amnesia released to me.
