John
The Past 60 Years

Soon after graduating from LaSalle in June of 1961, I joined the Jesuits at their novitiate in Lenox, Massachusetts. After 6 years there and in Weston, Massachusetts, I graduated from Boston College and started working towards a Ph.D. in philosophy at Notre Dame, which is located just north of South Bend, Indiana. After another 6 years, I moved to San Francisco to teach philosophy at the University of San Francisco. Three years later, I was studying law at the the University of California in Berkeley, across the bay from San Francisco. I was also dating a Rhode Island woman named Deborah Deery, who was working in San Francisco at that time and whom I married in 1981. In that year, Deb and I moved to South Bend, where I worked for 38 years at Notre Dame, mostly in its law school, but partly in its Philosophy Department. Deb and I have two great kids--Gena, who works for FEMA these days, and John, who works in the vast administrative bureaucracy at Indiana University, as does his wife, Alex(andra).
