FOB 2 was a Special Forces, Forward Operating Base just south of Kontum on QL 14. In late 1967 and early 1968 I was living at the base while we flew support missions for SOG. During that period, the 189th AHC, 119th AHC and 57th AHC were in support of SOG. Maj. (Ret) John L. Plaster wrote an excellent book that tells the story of SOG - "SOG The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam." He also published an excellent photo history - "SOG A Photo History of the Secret Wars." I don't believe anyone has told the aviation story of SOG yet. In 1972, I used the FOB as a refueling point when I was flying the AIR BOSS mission - call sign "SAGE STREET". The UH-1H helicopter I am standing beside, tail #66-16516, was destroyed when I was shot down on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos, December 12, 1967.

In April, 2001, SOG was awarded the Presidenmtial Unit Citation.
