The Auxiliary Drive

During my three years at the Academy (I spent my Junior Year at Our Lady of Providence High School Seminary), one of the annuals high points was the Auxiliary Drive.

During this period, which I believe lasted a few weeks, the whole student body turned into a fundraising army.

We kicked off the Auxiliary Drive with a stirring speech by our firebrand teacher Carl Toti. Our goal was to solicit money from our families, neighbors, and friends to pay for the education of young men who wanted to become Christian Brothers and attend Barrytown in New York.

At that time Barrytown was the House of Formation for the De La Salle Brothers. Many of the those who aspired to become Brothers were from the lower middle class and needed this financial assistance to complete their studies.

Each Home Room was pitted against the others to raise as much money as possible. As many of the students were not inclined to becoming mendicants, the Auxiliary Drive was not universally popular.

As for myself, I loved the Auxilary Drive. Not only were prizes awarded like school sweaters and other LaSalle paraphernalia, but we were granted days off if we achieved certain goals.

My Senior Home Room Teacher Brother Eugene Vorburger even asked me to address my fellow 4A's on how I raised money.

My advice to them was "Ask and You shall receive so that your joy may be fulfilled."
