Dear Fellow Members of the Class of 61,
Our 60th Class Reunion on Saturday, October 16th was a rousing success. Nearly 40 of us came from all over the country to enjoy a day filled with fellowship and memories of our days at 612 Academy Avenue.
The Day started with a Mass of Celebration offered by our classmate Father Randy Chew who challenged us to, βto look beyond our lives, to the needs of others and to access what is most important for all of us.β
Brother Dennis Malloy FSC, President of LaSalle, gave us an overview of the current state of affairs at La Salle. He emphasized the ongoing commitment of the De La Salle Brothers to provide a holistic education based on the values of the Gospel. Brother Dennis stressed the importance of continuing to make La Salle Academy a place that is accessible to economically challenged youngsters who cannot on their own afford the current tuition of $16,000.
A classmate rose to the occasion during the day to donate $1,000 to our Class of 1961 Endowment Fund, which we started last year. This Endowment will live in perpetuity and will be used exclusively to provide tuition assistance to students with demonstrated financial need who wish to attend the Academy. So far 41 members of our class have pledged or donated to the Endowment which now has a market value of over $50,000.
But the need is great and the applicants for financial assistance continue to increase β currently, 45% of La Salle students receive tuition assistance. More and more of the requests for tuition help now come from minority young people of Providence who know that the path to success begins with an excellent education.
And so it is that we, your fellow Lasallians, and members of the Class of 1961, reach out to you today to make a gift or pledge to our Class Endowment. Gifts of any amount will be welcome.
If you have questions or would like information on including La Salle in your estate plans, please contact Deb Konicki, director of Leadership Giving, in the Advancement Office at (401) 351-7750 ext. 135.
Warmest regards,
Andrew Checchia, Father Randy Chew, Leo Cooney, Jack Heslin, Jim Hopkins, Bob Sclama, Frank Sullivan, Bill Warburton
