WELCOME TO THE CLASS OF 1961's
60th CLASS REUNION WEBSITE

1961 Yearbook

The senior of today has to face many more problems than did his predecessors, but he has many more means for solving these problems. Each of the seniors on the following pages has been given high school courses designed to prepare him for college. Furthermore, his religion courses have prepared him to live a morally wholesome life. The senior has had at his disposal the advice of many capable men, who were willing to help him solve his problems. Yet, only in the measure that the senior utilizes what has been offered him, will he profit by these experiences.

These young men have been given opportunities by which they could measure their maturity. The necessity of solving problems, rather than pushing them aside, had been instilled into them.

Their social development has not been neglected. A new guidance course has been introduced to help the senior in the development of his personality. The canteen dances and other school dances have helped to bring the senior along the path of social development.

These things have been done and these opportunities have been afforded the senior of today in order that, armed with knowledge and experience, he might courageously face and successfully overcome whatever challenges await him in the future.

Dedication

Rev.Randy Chew

This reunion website is dedicated to our classmate Rev. Randy Chew, Pastor Emeritus, St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church Portsmouth RI, whose life of service reflects the core values taught to us at La Salle Academy.

The Class of 1961

As our class of over 300 entered the Doors of LaSalle Academy in September 1957, the US was facing a new set of challenges. The Russians had launched Sputnik and were ahead of us in the Space Race. This event shed light on the inadequacies of our education system and pushed our country to explore newer and more rigorous Science and Math Curricula in our schools.

Federal Troops forced integration of public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas. The events in the South called attention to the continued effects of Slavery and the Civil War which had ended less than a century before.

Father Joseph Lennon O.P. was our Graduation Speaker in June 1961. He himself was a Brothers' Boy, having graduated from the Academy in 1936. He urged us to remain "curious and discontent" in his address that warm night in the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

That we have done....Hopefully we have become Life Long Learners and will be able to share our experience, strength and hope as we gather once again at 612 Academy Avenue in October, 2021.

Remembering Our Teachers and Our Coaches

Many of us have fond memories of our years at La Salle and can vividly remember our teachers and our coaches. I cannot remember any of our teachers or coaches coddling us. They had high expectations for all of us, and they were not shy about applying whatever incentive was necessary to keep us moving toward our goal of becoming a La Salle graduate. This page is a way for us to remember and appreciate them as we look back more than 60 years to once again see their faces.

The 60th Class Reunion

The La Salle 60th class reunion committee has been meeting on Zoom to plan the events of our reunion. The committee has been coordinating with the La Salle Academy Alumni office on the details of the event to include date, time and venue. Because of the continuing disruption of social activities due to COVID–19 we do not have enough specifics at this time to provide the When, Where and What for the reunion. As we are able to lock in the details, we will keep you all posted here on this page.

When we have the final information, we will post it on the HOME PAGE of this website. If any of you would like to make comments or suggestions please feel free to do that on the Talking About La Salle Discussion Board. We are hoping for a good turnout of our classmates for this 60th reunion. For those who are unable to get to the reunion we hope this website will be a source of information for you and a “virtual” gathering space. Please use the site to tell your memories from your La Salle days and provide all of us an update on your life after leaving La Salle.
