Bernard "Bernie" L. Colardo
OBITUARY
Bernard "Bernie" L. Colardo, 73, passed away Saturday February 11, 2017 surrounded by his family.
Bernie was born in Providence, Rhode Island on October 16, 1943. He graduated from La Salle Academy and came to East Carolina University on a wrestling scholarship in 1961. Throughout his time at ECU he remained an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He left ECU to serve in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. After serving, he returned to ECU where he met his wife. Bernie and Emalynn made Greenville their home and are long time, avid Pirate fans and members of the Pirate club! Bernie served the City of Greenville as a Building Inspector, Chief Building Inspector and city consultant for 32 years before fully retiring. Bernie had a strong spirit of service and volunteered his time as a member and former president of both Council of Code Enforcement Officers and the N.C. Builders Association. He spent many years as his daughters grew up, coaching and volunteering with the Pitt County Greenville Girls Softball League, N.C. Dance Arts Theatre and the Rose High-School girls' Soccer team and Orchestra. Bernie was an active member of Jarvis UMC where he served in numerous capacities. Closest to his heart were the Youth Group, Missions Committee, Go Team and Upwards Basketball.
Bernie is predeceased by his parents, Sebastian and Loretta Colardo, his brother, Thomas Colardo and his grandson, Samuel Colardo Hopper.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Emalynn and his three daughters Jennifer Hopper and husband Rob of Raleigh, Melissa Meacham and husband James of Davidson and Catherine Colardo of Greenville, NC as well as his sister, Linda Littleton of Emerald Isle, NC and his grandchildren Emma, Sophia, Piper, David and Olivia.
Bernie was the most lovable "yankee" who moved south! He opened his heart, home, and kitchen not only to his family but to friends and strangers alike. His sly sense of humor and his silent way of offering encouragement and graciousness to everyone are just a few of his rare gifts. He will be missed most when his family walks and surfs the NC beaches without him and cheers on his beloved Pirates.
