ALUMNI UPDATES

John G. "Jack" Heslin
My life after La Salle

After graduating from La Salle I attended Providence College and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology.

Jean and I have been married since June 5th 1965. We were married four days after I graduated from PC. We have four grown children; three sons, a daughter and nine grandchildren.

I completed a 20-plus year military career and retired as an Army Lieutenant Colonel. My career included a variety of command and staff assignments. While on active duty, I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Master of Arts in Sociology. In 1978 I graduated from the Naval War College, Command and Staff Course, at Newport Rhode Island.

I had two tours in Vietnam, 1967 – 1968 and 1971 – 1972, flying helicopters in the Central Highlands for both tours. My military awards include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with V device and 24 oak leaf clusters along with other medals and awards.

After retiring from the military, my civilian career included 19 years with John Tyler Community College in Virginia serving at various times as a Sociology Professor, Campus Administrator, Apprenticeship Coordinator, and Workforce Development Program Coordinator.

After retiring from the Virginia Community College System, I started a consulting company, along with my daughter, which focused on workforce development and integrated computer solutions for business. I was a founding member of the Chester Rotary Club in Virginia, and I am a life member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association VHPA, the VFW, American Legion, and the Distinguished Flying Cross Society.

One of my passions has been continuing to grow and maintaining my Vietnam War history website “The Battle of Kontum.” Based on my Vietnam experiences, I have published two books, “Reflections From the Web” (2004) and “THUNDER: Stories From the First Tour” (2018).

Since my retirement in January of 2011, Jean and I have been living in Carolina Shores, North Carolina. I enjoy playing golf, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
